Earlier Works

Before Rivers: mapped or not, Maísa Stolz developed a detailed figurative practice using paper as a sculptural medium.

Initiated in 2010, this earlier series reimagines classic masterpieces as life-sized animal figures. Through these works, Stolz explored the relationship between humans and animals, nature and culture, material and transformation.

This body of work established the technical foundation of her practice and continues to inform her current work with paper, texture and presence.

Interpretation

That series draws inspiration from classic masterpieces, reimagining well-known works of art as life-sized animal figures. The idea for this series took root during my time teaching children in Brazil.

These sculptures are not only artistic expressions but also provide a delightful and engaging way to introduce young minds to the world of art.

Initiated in 2010, this collection is the result of extensive research into the potential of paper as a medium for sculpture. Each piece in the series is a reinterpretation of a consecrated work of art, examining the intricate relationships between humans and animals and the intersections of nature and humanity.

Selected Press

A selection of press and editorial features on Maisa Stolz's earlier figurative paper sculptures in Oxfordshire.

"Maísa mediates between nature, the natural, and the human, always with a link to the fantastic and a hint of questioning, a touch of controversy... she is not just a fantastic figure or a child; there are unspoken words hidden in her beautiful form".
